Hello,
the ComSys group has an open HiWi position available (deutsch/english). The general topic of the position is wireless networking with a special focus on security, collaborative networks, and mobility.
What is it about?
--------------------
As research group we are working on a large-scale Wi-Fi system called Mobile ACcess. The aim of the system is to provide ubiquitous, cheap, and fast Internet access in the city center of Aachen. The basic concept of the network is to form a municipal Wi-Fi network on the basis of independent and privately or commercially operated access points. We develop communication protocols and maintain a prototype implementation that works on mobile devices, wireless routers, and servers.
About the project:
----------------------
Mobile ACcess is a joint project between seven Institutions from Industry and Academia. Among these institutions are the Fraunhofer Institure FIT, LANCOM systems (a Wi-Fi router manufacturer), regioIT, and the cities of Aachen and Monschau. Moreover, we have a close collaboration with the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT in Finland. For more information visit http://www.mobile-access.org.
Your Job:
-----------
We are a team of researchers and students who are working intensively on this project. You will be working as a part if our team and help to develop, extend, optimize, and maintain the software for a number or embedded wireless Linux devices. We are conducting very practical work with concrete challenges in software architecture, software development, and portability to different embedded Linux devices (Maemo, Android, OpenWRT). Your major responsibility will be to develop and maintain the client, server, and firewall software for different wireless platforms.
Your background:
---------------------
You should be interested in mobile communication systems, and you should be motivated to support our implementation efforts in this regard. According to technical skills, you should be proficient in C and Linux (file system layout, shell networking tools, shell scripting). We appreciate if you have some experience in software development tools like svn, gdb, bzr, automake, etc.
What we offer:

We offer the usual payment for HiWi students (9-10 / week) with flexible working hours. You will work in a motivated young team of HiWis and researchers. Thereby, you will acquire skills in team-based software development. Most importantly, you will be working on a real-world project with high practical relevance. You will have the opportunity experience the practical aspects of your studies in the area of mobile communications systems and distributed systems. Finally, the position is a good opportunity to prepare for a Master's Thesis or Diplomarbeit.
