The Distributed Systems Group at RWTH Aachen (http://ds.cs.rwth-aachen.de) is actively developing software for large-scale Wi-Fi systems. The goal of the project „Mobile ACcess“ is to provide ubiquitous, cheap, and fast wireless Internet access in the city center of Aachen. The basic concept of the network is to form a municipal Wi-Fi network on the basis of independent and privately or commercially operated access points. In this project, our focus is on communication protocols that provide a common network layer for this Wi-Fi network. We maintain a prototype implementation that connects mobile devices, wireless routers, and servers in the network.
Mobile ACcess is a joint project between seven institutions from industry and academia. Among these institutions are the Fraunhofer Institute FIT, LANCOM Systems, regioIT, and the cities of Aachen and Monschau. Moreover, we maintain a close collaboration with the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology HIIT in Finland. For more information on the project visit http://www.mobile-access.org.
